The soy milk woes...

So, I have this very odd thing with soy milk that whenever I drink soy milk my throat gets all swollen and itchy.

This is kinda weird because I can eat tofu and soy beans with no problem, so I guess I'm alergic to something else in the stuff (but I don't know what)...

my question is...are there any other things that can be substituted for soy milk in most (if not all) recipes?

Rice Dream!

Yes, agreed! I also happen to like the
texture and taste of rice milk
over that of the marketed
soy brands.

They were the first brand in my opinion that got vegan ice "cream" right.

It's harder to get up here (in the normal supermarkets) so I usually just drink vanilla soy milk.

I'm just not a big fan of sweeten milk substances.
I dig the plain and use the non-sweetened in
cooking when available.

As for Rice Dream's ice dessert, I am in love
with it. Seriously. If I wasn't already
married I'd consider proposing to
the makers.

Is it possible you're allergic to one of the other ingredients in soy milk? For example, most soy milk contains a thickening agent such as carageenan. I'd suggest trying a plain soy milk (just soy and water, and possibly vitamins and minerals) before giving it up entirely.

Almond milk is pretty good (albeit expensive). I don't care for rice milk, but you should try it to see if you do. Oat milk is also a possibility.

Rice or Almond milk can often be substituted for soy or dairy milk.

I would be more concerned about what sounds like a food allergy than I would about finding a substitute. That can easily develop into a life-threatening condition. You should get professional advice from a health professional who knows aboult allergies.

well...i often get the same things from a rather large assortment of fruit, and had originally thought it to be of the same type of thing...but the fruit allergy is always killed off by cooking the fruit, which does not work in the case of the soy milk.

i think i may take your suggestion...

my lips swell up and ache when i eat a lot of common fruits and veggies. carrots, apples, celery, cherries, apricots, etc etc. i don't think it's very serious, just annoying as hell. i wish it would stop.

I get the same thing with fruit, even down to cooking stopping the problem. Peaches, lychee, mango, under-ripe bananas, melons, and so on. I'm trying to persuade my doctor that I should carry an epipen.

It's the one good thing about hay fever, though. When I'm full of antihistamines, I can eat any fruit I like :-)

ya, I have a severe kiwi allergy that I didn't know about until a few years ago, when I ate a piece the size of my fingernail & all of a sudden my chest & throat constricted, and my bottom lip swelled up...not pretty. I had eaten the stuff as a very young child, but decided one day that I didn't like it, so I hadn't eaten kiwi for years & years...I'm not sure if I had the allergy as a child & that was what made me dislike it, or whether I developed it because I never ate kiwi, but either way it's a good idea to go and get a scratch test to be safe, and then maybe you'll find out if it's something besides the soy that is making you react.

sugars

digitiq - Sounds like you are allergic to fruit with higher concentrations of sugars. Unripe bananas have a higher amount of sugar than ripe ones. Do you have the same problem with fructose sweetened juices?

Don't know. I don't drink them!

It sounds like you are allergic to soy. Soy milk has a much higher concentration of soy than either tofu or soy beans themselves, so that would explain why you can eat those things but have an allergic reaction to soy milk.

I agree with [info]frederic that rice milk should work fine.

I really like oat milk if you can find it. Otherwise rice milk is quite nice (depending on the brand, I guess). Personally I'd get the unsweetened variety because I find they are both sweet enough on their own... but that's just me! :)

I agree about oat milk (tasty!), but it can be pretty hard to find!

I agree with digitig - see an allergist! I had to see my doctor because I too experienced the itchy swelling throat after drinking soy milk. I panicked and my neighbor had to call the paramedics because my throat closed so much I was having a hard time breathing. Turns out that carrageenan was the culprit, not soy! Would have sucked if it was soy because I'm half Korean and there's no way I could survive without it ;)

Actually, from what I understand, soy milk in America is processed in such a way that it's not as pure as it could be, so you can have some allergie problems to soy milk, without being allergic to soy. I'm not sure about all of the logistics behind it, though.

Almond Milk

I hear almond milk is good and is better for you than rice milk. I have some friends who make it themselves.
